We're particularly aiming to find a wide range of specialist directories (Vortals), which provide vast amounts of information on the various elements related to a given subject..

Google UK	Probably the most popular search engine, with arguably the largest database of them all.
Yahoo UK	The most comprehensive directory you'll find; everyone's heard of Yahoo!
Lycos UK	One of the oldest search sites on the web. Still going fairly strong, with some good relevant search results.
Altavista UK	Another one of the original search engines. Offers fairly comprehensive search for images, MP3, audio and video files, as well as news and the standard web search.
DMOZ - the Open Directory	A vast categorised directory of sites, covering all subject areas. Although it takes a long time for a site to be added, DMOZ is seen as the 'backbone of the web'. All of the major search engines use it as a reference to some extent.
About.com	A huge site, arranged as a directory, but edited by experts in the subjects present. The editors trawl the web looking for useful content related to their subject and post a link to it in their category.
Ask Jeeves	A popular consumer search engine where the user can ask questions to find what they are looking for, rather than perform a traditional search.
Alltheweb.com	A clean, fast engine whose design resembles that of Google. Uses the same database as Lycos, with the advantage that it is a lot faster.
MSN UK	Part of the Microsoft Network, MSN UK is a portal offering a comprehensive search facility as well as links to articles on many topics, including shopping, health, etc..
